Several analytical methods can quantify glutathione, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV or fluorescence detection for separating GSH and GSSG. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) offers higher specificity and sensitivity, often detecting nanomolar concentrations. The enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, measures total glutathione by coupling reduction of GSSG to a colorimetric or fluorometric readout. Capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical detection are also used in specialized laboratories. Each method has distinct advantages and limitations regarding throughput, cost, and susceptibility to interference.
Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
Accurate measurement of glutathione begins with careful sample handling. Because GSH oxidizes rapidly to GSSG, samples must be processed quickly or frozen immediately. Acid precipitation with metaphosphoric acid or perchloric acid is common; it lowers pH, precipitates proteins, and helps preserve the reduced form. Chelating agents such as EDTA can limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. For whole blood, hemolysis releases glutathione from erythrocytes, so plasma and serum values differ substantially from whole blood values.
Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its glutamate-cysteine linkage uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate, a feature that resists standard peptidases. The cysteine residue provides a thiol group, which gives the molecule its reducing character. In cells, glutathione is often the most abundant small-molecule thiol, with concentrations varying widely by tissue and compartment. It exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH, while oxidation produces a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG.

In cells, glutathione exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH. When two GSH molecules react, they form oxidized glutathione, or GSSG, which contains a disulfide bond. The ratio of GSH to GSSG is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress. Enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase help cycle the molecule between these two states. This cycling supports antioxidant defense, detoxification of reactive molecules, and regulation of certain signaling pathways.
Glutathione is present in most tissues, with especially high concentrations in the liver. It also serves as a cofactor for some enzymes and helps transport amino acids across cell membranes. In plants and microorganisms, glutathione contributes to stress responses and metal handling. The molecule is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps, first producing gamma-glutamylcysteine and then adding glycine. Because cysteine availability often limits synthesis, dietary and metabolic factors can influence glutathione levels. Research continues to examine how these levels relate to health and disease.
Because GSH is central to redox balance, its status is studied in aging, liver disease, neurodegenerative conditions, and metabolic disorders. Observational studies often report lower GSH or higher GSSG in affected tissues, but such associations do not establish that raising glutathione changes disease outcomes. Oral glutathione is digested into amino acids, and whether intact absorption occurs remains debated; precursors such as N-acetylcysteine and cysteine donors are also investigated. Regulatory agencies generally treat glutathione as a dietary supplement, not an approved drug, and clinical claims require evidence from controlled trials.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, with the unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage between glutamate and cysteine. Its cysteine thiol group makes it a major non-enzymatic antioxidant in cells. The reduced form, GSH, predominates in most intracellular compartments, while the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG, is produced when GSH reduces reactive oxygen species. Intracellular concentrations often reach millimolar levels, whereas plasma concentrations are much lower, typically in the low micromolar range. This gradient reflects active synthesis, transport, and consumption rather than passive distribution.
In cells, glutathione helps maintain the reducing environment of the cytosol and supports enzymes that counteract reactive oxygen species. It acts as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases, which reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, and for glutathione S-transferases, which conjugate electrophiles. The ratio of GSH to GSSG is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress, although the ratio can vary by compartment and cell type. Glutathione also stores cysteine, an amino acid that can be limiting for protein synthesis and antioxidant defense.
Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps. The enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine. The first step is rate-limiting and is influenced by cysteine availability and feedback inhibition by GSH. Breakdown involves gamma-glutamyl transferase and subsequent peptidases, which release constituent amino acids for reuse. Because turnover differs among tissues, measurements from blood, plasma, and tissues are not directly interchangeable. Research continues to clarify how compartment-specific pools are regulated in health and disease.
== Trade names == Several companies have attempted to trademark particular strains, and as a marketing technique, have invented scientific-sounding names for the strains. Danone (Dannon in the United States) markets the subspecies strain DN 173 010 as Bifidus Digestivum (UK), Bifidus Regularis (US and Mexico), Bifidobacterium Lactis or B.L. Regularis (Canada), DanRegularis (Brazil), Bifidus Actiregularis (Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain and the UK), and Bifidus Essensis in the Middle East (and formerly in Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and The Netherlands) through Activia from Safi Danone KSA. One notable example involved Danone’s attempt to enforce a trademark on an invented probiotic strain name. Danone held a trademark for “Bifidus Essensis”, which it used in marketing its Activia products, and sued Glanbia after the launch of Yoplait “Essence” products in the Irish market, claiming trademark infringement. In 2007, the Irish Commercial Court ruled against Danone, finding that the “Essensis” trademark had not been genuinely used as a product brand in the relevant market and ordering its revocation in that context. Chr. Hansen A/S from Denmark has a similar claim on a strain of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, marketed under the trademark BB-12. Lidl lists "Bifidobacterium BB-12" in its "Proviact" yogurt. Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 and Bi-07 are strains from DuPont's Danisco FloraFIT range.
== Fluorescence == The quinine in tonic water will fluoresce under ultraviolet light. In fact, quinine will visibly fluoresce in direct sunlight against a dark background. The quinine molecules release energy as light instead of heat, which is more common. The state is not stable, and the molecules will immediately return to a ground state and no longer glow once the UV source is removed.
=== Drug addiction === It has been found that cocaine produces a decrease in Cystine-Glutamate exchange via system Xc-, leading to a decrease in basal, extra synaptic glutamate levels in the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) region of the brains of cocaine-withdrawn rats. It has also been observed in withdrawn rats that a decrease in Group 2 mGluR inhibition of vesicular release, most likely due to the decrease in extrasynaptic glutamate levels, leads to an increase in cocaine-evoked glutamate signaling in their NAcc. An infusion of cysteine in the NAcc of withdrawn rats leads to an increase in extrasynaptic glutamate, near the levels of the control rats, and prevents an increase in synaptic glutamate signaling after a cocaine injection. These findings suggest there is a decrease in system Xc- activity in cocaine-withdrawn rats. It has also been found that cocaine increases glutamate signaling in the synaptic cleft, further supporting this conclusion. Administration of the cysteine prodrugs N-acetylcysteine or L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate blocks cocaine reinstatement in rats. N-acetylcysteine has been shown to decrease drug-seeking behavior for nicotine and heroin as well. However, N-acetylcysteine does not alter the cocaine-induced rush or euphoria; it only causes a reduction in drug-seeking behavior. N-acetylcysteine works by increasing levels of cysteine in cells, leading to an increase in system Xc- activity.
Ortner's syndrome is a rare cardiovocal syndrome and involves recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy from cardiovascular disease. It was first described by Norbert Ortner (1865–1935), an Austrian physician, in 1897. Dysphagia caused by a similar mechanism is referred to as dysphagia aortica (also called dysphagia megalatriensis), or, in the case of subclavian artery aberrancy, as dysphagia lusoria. Due to compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, it can cause the hoarseness of the voice, which can also be a sign of mitral stenosis. A second Ortner's syndrome, Ortner's syndrome II, refers to abdominal angina.

== Epidemiology == The prevalence of hyperadrenocorticism in dogs is between 0.2% and 0.28%. An English study comparing dogs with hyperadrenocorticism to general hospital cases found smaller breeds, overweight dogs, dogs over the age of 9, and neutered dogs to be more likely to be diagnosed.
An – actinide Some actinides can exist in several oxide forms such as An2O3, AnO2, An2O5 and AnO3. For all actinides, oxides AnO3 are amphoteric and An2O3, AnO2 and An2O5 are basic, they easily react with water, forming bases:
=== Emerging technologies === Many different forms of human enhancing technologies are either on the way or are currently being tested and trialed. A few of these emerging technologies include human genetic engineering (gene therapy), neurotechnology (neural implants and brain–computer interfaces), cyberware, strategies for engineered negligible senescence, nanomedicine, and 3D bioprinting. Variants of human genetic engineering with so far limited usage include the artificial creation of human-animal hybrids (where each cell has partly human and partly animal genetic contents) and human-animal chimeras (where some cells are human and some cells are animal in origin).
Chickenpox was commonly confused with smallpox in the immediate post-eradication era. Chickenpox and smallpox could be distinguished by several methods. Unlike smallpox, chickenpox does not usually affect the palms and soles. Additionally, chickenpox pustules are of varying size due to variations in the timing of pustule eruption: smallpox pustules are all very nearly the same size since the viral effect progresses more uniformly. A variety of laboratory methods were available for detecting chickenpox in the evaluation of suspected smallpox cases.

=== Valve Corporation v. Rothschild === In 2015, Display Technologies LLC, one of several IP-holding companies owned by Leigh Rothschild, sued Valve over patent infringement. While the suit was dismissed by January 2016, Valve shortly followed by acquiring licenses to twenty patents owned across Rothschild's firms. Around 2022, another Rothschild company, Patent Asset Management, began sending Valve demands to buy new licenses to two of the patents Valve already had licensed. Valve filed a lawsuit against the company in 2023 under Washington state's Patent Troll Protection and Consumer Protection Acts. In the months that followed, at least three lawsuits were filed in Texas by Rothschild's companies against Valve accusing Valve of additional patent infringement. Valve argued these suits were retaliatory to their Washington suit, and requested them to be dismissed. In February 2026, a jury found in Valve's favor on all counts.

TikTok's and Douyin's censorship policies have been criticized as non-transparent. Internal guidelines against the promotion of violence, separatism, and "demonization of countries" could be used to prohibit content related to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre, Falun Gong, the Cambodian genocide, the 1998 Indonesian riots, Kurdish nationalism, ethnic conflicts between blacks and whites or between different Islamic sects, and independence movements in Tibet, Taiwan, Chechnya and Northern Ireland. A more specific list banned criticisms against world leaders, including past and present ones from Russia, the United States, Japan, North and South Korea, India, Indonesia, and Turkey. In 2019, The Guardian reported that TikTok had censored videos of topics not favored by the Chinese government. That year, TikTok took down a video about human rights abuses in the Xinjiang internment camps against Uyghurs but restored it after 50 minutes as well as the creator's account, saying that the action was a mistake and triggered by a brief "satirical" image of Osama bin Laden in another post. Other human rights activists have also said that their TikTok videos discussing human rights violations of the Uyghurs have been taken down. TikTok moderators were instructed to suppress posts from "For You" recommendations if the users shown were deemed "too ugly, poor, or disabled". The consumption of alcohol, full or partial nudity, LGBT, and intersex contents were restricted even in places where they are legal.
== Biosynthesis == As an essential amino acid, threonine is not synthesized in humans, and needs to be present in proteins in the diet. Adult humans require about 20 mg/kg body weight/day. In plants and microorganisms, threonine is synthesized from aspartic acid via α-aspartyl-semialdehyde and homoserine. Homoserine undergoes O-phosphorylation; this phosphate ester undergoes hydrolysis concomitant with relocation of the OH group. Enzymes involved in a typical biosynthesis of threonine include:
=== Hot melt extrusion === Hot melt extrusion is utilized in pharmaceutical solid oral dose processing to enable delivery of drugs with poor solubility and bioavailability. Hot melt extrusion has been shown to molecularly disperse poorly soluble drugs in a polymer carrier increasing dissolution rates and bioavailability. The process involves the application of heat, pressure and agitation to mix materials together and 'extrude' them through a die. Twin-screw high shear extruders blend materials and simultaneously break up particles. The resulting particles can be blended and compressed into tablets or filled into capsules.

Glutathione oxidizes quickly when cells are disrupted or when samples sit at room temperature. Rapid processing or immediate freezing minimizes the conversion of GSH to GSSG. This step helps ensure that the measured ratio reflects the original biological state.
The Tietze assay is an enzymatic recycling method that measures total glutathione. It uses glutathione reductase to reduce GSSG back to GSH, which then reacts with a chromogen or fluorophore. The reaction cycles repeatedly, amplifying the signal for detection.
Yes, but the choice of blood fraction matters. Plasma or serum contains low glutathione levels and is easily affected by hemolysis. Whole blood mainly reflects the high glutathione content of erythrocytes, so results from different fractions are not directly comparable.
Glutathione is a sulfur-containing tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is found in most cells and participates in redox balance and detoxification reactions.
