In cells, glutathione exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH. When two GSH molecules react, they form oxidized glutathione, or GSSG, which contains a disulfide bond. The ratio of GSH to GSSG is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress. Enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase help cycle the molecule between these two states. This cycling supports antioxidant defense, detoxification of reactive molecules, and regulation of certain signaling pathways.
Glutathione is present in most tissues, with especially high concentrations in the liver. It also serves as a cofactor for some enzymes and helps transport amino acids across cell membranes. In plants and microorganisms, glutathione contributes to stress responses and metal handling. The molecule is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps, first producing gamma-glutamylcysteine and then adding glycine. Because cysteine availability often limits synthesis, dietary and metabolic factors can influence glutathione levels. Research continues to examine how these levels relate to health and disease.
Storage conditions strongly influence glutathione stability. The solid reduced form is commonly kept desiccated at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Aqueous solutions are less stable because the thiol group reacts with dissolved oxygen, and oxidation accelerates at neutral or alkaline pH. Acidic solutions and oxygen-free handling can slow degradation, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. Researchers often verify concentration before use, because apparent losses can arise from oxidation or water uptake.
Measuring glutathione in biological samples requires attention to oxidation and matrix effects. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection can separate reduced and oxidized forms after derivatization. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry offers higher specificity and can quantify glutathione alongside related thiols. Because glutathione can oxidize during sample handling, many protocols use rapid acidification with metaphosphoric acid or sulfosalicylic acid. Internal standards help correct for losses during extraction and analysis.
Enzymatic recycling assays provide a complementary approach for total glutathione. In these methods, glutathione reductase reduces oxidized glutathione while a thiol-reactive reagent, such as 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), produces a colored product. The reaction cycles between reduced and oxidized forms, amplifying the signal. Spectrophotometric or fluorometric detection can then estimate concentration. Distinguishing reduced glutathione from glutathione disulfide often requires separate aliquots, masking agents, or chromatographic separation, and the choice affects reported values.

Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent enzymatic steps. The first step combines glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase. The second step adds glycine, producing the complete tripeptide, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase. Glutathione itself can inhibit the first enzyme, providing negative feedback when levels are high. Because cysteine is often limiting, its availability influences how quickly the pathway proceeds. These reactions occur in the cytosol, and the resulting glutathione can be distributed to other compartments.
Glutathione functions in redox balance, detoxification, and sulfur amino acid storage. It participates in reactions that help maintain ascorbate and protein thiol status. The molecule serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. Glutathione also contributes to the metabolism of xenobiotics and to the transport of cysteine between tissues. How interorgan transport and tissue-specific regulation shape whole-body pools remains an active area of study.
Commercial glutathione is available in research-grade, food-grade, and supplement-grade forms, and purity specifications differ accordingly. Certificates of analysis commonly report identity by nuclear magnetic resonance or mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, residual solvents, and heavy metals. Reference standards with assigned purity support calibration, while isotopically labeled glutathione can serve as an internal standard for mass spectrometry. For supplements, label claims may not be independently verified, and regulatory oversight varies by country. Verification often involves third-party testing for identity, potency, and contaminants.
Quantifying glutathione requires distinguishing GSH from GSSG and preventing oxidation during sample preparation. Common approaches include the enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, which measures total glutathione after converting GSSG to GSH. HPLC with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection and LC-MS/MS can separate and quantify both forms, sometimes after derivatization of the thiol group. Blood, plasma, and tissue samples differ in matrix and baseline concentrations, so method validation must account for recovery, linearity, and interference. No single assay is universally standard.
On March 28, 2013, a team of bioengineers from Stanford University led by Drew Endy announced that they had created the biological equivalent of a transistor, which they named a "transcriptor". That is, they created a three-terminal device with a logic system that can control other components. The transcriptor regulates the flow of RNA polymerase across a strand of DNA using special combinations of enzymes to control movement. According to project member Jerome Bonnet, "The choice of enzymes is important. We have been careful to select enzymes that function in bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, so that bio-computers can be engineered within a variety of organisms." Transcriptors can replicate traditional AND, OR, NOR, NAND, XOR, and XNOR gates with equivalents, which Endy dubbed "Boolean Integrase Logic (BIL) gates", in a single-layer process (i.e., without requiring multiple instances of the simpler gates to build up more complex ones). Like a traditional transistor, a transcriptor can amplify an input signal. A group of transcriptors can do almost any type of computing, including counting and comparison.
By that time, BMS had already withdrawn the drug from the market in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. In August 2020, Teva Pharmaceuticals placed nefazodone in shortage due to a shortage of a raw ingredient. On December 20, 2021, nefazodone was again made available in all strengths.
== Medical uses == Selenium disulfide is sold as an antifungal agent in shampoos (such as Selsun Blue) for the treatment of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis associated in the scalp with fungi of genus Malassezia. It is also used on the body to treat tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor), a type of fungal skin infection caused by a different species of Malassezia. A 2015 systematic review of topical treatments for seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp identified only a single randomized controlled trial evaluating selenium disulfide for the condition. It was a three-arm trial of 246 people with moderate to severe dandruff and compared treatment with 2% ketoconazole shampoo (n=97), 2.5% selenium disulfide shampoo (n=100), and placebo (shampoo base with no antiseborrheic agent) (n=49) for 29 days. The study found a 73% reduction in dandruff score with ketoconazole, a 67% reduction with selenium disulfide, and a 45% reduction with placebo. Based on the study, the systematic review concluded that selenium disulfide may be effective in the treatment of dandruff but that the available evidence is limited and overall evidence quality is low. It also found that while selenium disulfide has infrequent side effects, it seems to have more side effects than ketoconazole shampoo. Consequently, the review concluded that selenium disulfide should not be considered as a first-line therapy but instead should be used as an alternative treatment after other therapies like ketoconazole shampoo have proven not effective.
Protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) is an amplification technique (conceptually like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) but not involving nucleotides) to multiply misfolded prions originally developed by Soto and colleagues. It is a test for spongiform encephalopathies like chronic wasting disease (CWD) or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
Young Atlantic cod or haddock prepared in strips for cooking is called scrod. In the United Kingdom, Atlantic cod is one of the most common ingredients in fish and chips, along with haddock and plaice. The cod's soft liver can be tinned (canned) and eaten.

=== Ceramic nanomaterials === While investigating MAO-like structures, Barron noticed the relationship between clusters and minerals, at the same time he became interested in metalloxane polymers. He determined that these "polymers" were actually nanoparticles. Furthermore, he showed that these metal oxide nanoparticles could be chemically made by a top-down approach from minerals with which they shared their structures. With the ability to make a range of nanoparticles with different functional groups and control over size, Barron found that the structure and physical properties of macroscopic materials could be controlled by alterations at the nanometer scale. Barron was the first to discover that nanoparticle derived ceramics could be designed to have intra-granular porosity, meaning that the pores are within the crystal grain rather than between the crystal grains as normally observed. This had implications in composites and in membranes and separation processes. Through his research, Barron developed a process that forms hollow spheres of ceramic with exceptional crush strength. Barron rationalized that if hollow ceramic spheres could be made on a large scale, they could replace dense ceramics being used in oil extraction and minimize waste. He created a spin-off company to commercialize this technology. In 2010, Barron and his team, on the request of U.S.
=== Rare decay modes === Spontaneous fission accounts for about 1.1×10−9% of thorium-232 decays, corresponding to a partial half-life of about 1.3×1021 years. Double beta decay to uranium-232 is also theoretically possible. A 2020 experimental search set lower half-life limits for such decays to excited states of uranium-232.
== Society and culture == Brand names of lente insulin that have been discontinued include Iletin (animal), and HumulinL/NovolinL (human). As of 2023, Lente insulin is produced under the brand name Vetsulin for veterinary use in dogs and cats with diabetes.
Ghana possesses industrial minerals, hydrocarbons and precious metals. It is an emerging designated digital economy with mixed economy hybridisation and an emerging market. It has an economic plan target known as the "Ghana Vision 2020". This plan envisions Ghana as the first African country to become a developed country between 2020 and 2029 and a newly industrialised country between 2030 and 2039. This excludes fellow Group of 24 member and Sub-Saharan African country South Africa, which is a newly industrialised country. Ghana's economy has ties to the Chinese yuan renminbi along with Ghana's gold reserves. In 2013, the Bank of Ghana began circulating the renminbi throughout Ghanaian state-owned banks and to the Ghana public as hard currency along with the national Ghanaian cedi for second national trade currency. Between 2012 and 2013, 38% of rural dwellers were experiencing poverty whereas 11% of urban dwellers were. Urban areas hold greater opportunity for employment, particularly in informal trade, while 94% of "rural poor households" participate in the agricultural sector. The Volta River Authority and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, both state-owned, are the two major electricity producers. The Akosombo Dam, built on the Volta River in 1965, along with the Bui Dam, the Kpong Dam and other hydroelectric dams, provide hydropower.

The alien conspiracy theory and queer ladder of mobility theories state that ethnicity and 'outsider' status (immigrants, or those not within the dominant ethnocentric groups) and their influences are thought to dictate the prevalence of organized crime in society. The alien theory posits that the contemporary structures of organized crime gained prominence during the 1860s in Sicily and that elements of the Sicilian population are responsible for the foundation of most European and North American organized crime, made up of Italian-dominated crime families. Bell's theory of the 'queer ladder of mobility' hypothesized that 'ethnic succession' (the attainment of power and control by one more marginalized ethnic group over other less marginalized groups) occurs by promoting the perpetration of criminal activities within a disenfranchised or oppressed demographic. Whilst early organized crime was dominated by the Irish Mob (early 1800s), they were relatively substituted by the Sicilian Mafia and Italian-American Mafia, the Aryan Brotherhood (1960s onward), Colombian Medellín Cartel and Cali cartel (mid-1970s - 1990s), and more recently the Mexican Tijuana Cartel (late 1980s onward), Mexican Los Zetas (late 1990s to onward), the Russian Mafia (1988 onward), terrorism-related organized crime Al-Qaeda (1988 onward), the Taliban (1994 onward), and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) (2010s to onward). Many argue this misinterprets and overstates the role of ethnicity in organized crime.
== Contraindications == The only absolute contraindication to the use of ivermectin is hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or any component of the formulation. In children under the age of five or those who weigh less than 15 kilograms (33 pounds), there is limited data regarding the efficacy or safety of ivermectin, though the available data demonstrate few adverse effects. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics cautions against use of ivermectin in such patients, as the blood–brain barrier is less developed, and thus there may be an increased risk of particular CNS side effects such as encephalopathy, ataxia, coma, or death. The American Academy of Family Physicians also recommends against use in these patients, given a lack of sufficient data to prove drug safety. Ivermectin is secreted in very low concentration in breast milk. It remains unclear if ivermectin is safe during pregnancy.
==== NATO ==== The foreign secretary, Geoffrey Howe, spoke highly of Heseltine's contribution to NATO and WEU conferences. Heseltine was as angry as Thatcher at the US invasion of Grenada, a Commonwealth country. He wanted warmer relations with the Soviets and was sceptical about the US Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"), putting in a brief and grudging appearance at Caspar Weinberger's Ditchley Park Conference about the topic in 1985. Heseltine came close to misleading the House of Commons over the meeting of NATO defence ministers at Montebello, Quebec, in October 1983. He stated that no "specific" proposals had been made to update NATO short range and tactical nuclear weapons. In fact a decision had been made in principle to do so. Crick describes Heseltine's answers as "highly disingenuous and deceitful". At the time NATO was claiming to be cutting back on such weapons, and the peace movement was still powerful in Germany where such weapons might be used.

Glutathione is a tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its cysteine residue provides a thiol group that is central to its redox activity. The glutamate-cysteine bond forms through the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate.
Reduced glutathione, GSH, can donate electrons and become oxidized to GSSG. The balance between these forms reflects the cell's redox environment. A shift toward GSSG is commonly interpreted as evidence of oxidative stress, though the ratio can vary by tissue and method.
Glutathione occurs in nearly all cell types, with notable amounts in the liver. It is also present in the lungs, kidneys, and red blood cells. Concentrations differ among tissues and change with age, diet, and disease states.
Chromatographic methods can separate the two forms before detection. Enzymatic assays often measure total glutathione first and then use a separate procedure to estimate the oxidized fraction. The difference between total and oxidized amounts provides an indirect estimate of the reduced form.
